Internet offers more than Facebook

If you are sick of the same old sites, Facebook, Myspace and TMZ, there are some alternatives available on the Web that offer just as much mindless entertainment.

My newest online obsession is News Groper (newsgroper.com), a Web site devoted to the fictional blogs of celebrities, politicians and other notable people. Finally Brad Pitt has a place to vent about his frustrations about being married to Angelina Jolie.

If the imaginary exploits of Pitt traveling around the world are not of interest, jump over to the George W. Bush page and read about what the might be thinking about American politics. The site is perfect for a good belly laugh.

Blogging will add awareness to Graphic

I have seen you do it, your friends watch you do it and professors are obviously aware of it. The “it” is reading the online Graphic while you should be taking notes or paying attention in class.

If you keep reading this column here in print, or online, you may even get a free lunch out of the deal.

Our online numbers have shown that high traffic times, which are between 7:30 and 9 a.m. and 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., coincide with typical class times. Certainly paying attention in class is important but reading the Graphic is necessary as well. The Graphic is one of the few places to go to read about the entire Pepperdine community.

Appeal-Democrat wins D.R. Segal Award of Excellence

Appeal wins award for journalism excellence

The Appeal-Democrat has won three awards, including one for journalism excellence.

Freedom Communications Inc., parent company of the Appeal-Democrat, presented the newspaper with one of the two 2006 D.R. Segal Awards, named after the former Appeal-Democrat editor and Freedom CEO.

The award, recognizing overall journalism excellence, was based on the results of independent grading by the American Press Institute.

The Appeal-Democrat was awarded in the papers-under-25,000-circulation category. Freedom Communications, headquartered in Irvine, publishes more than 70 newspapers.

The D.R. Segal award was presented last month at a Freedom conference in Tempe, Ariz.

“This prestigious award is a tribute to the great work being done by our newsroom and throughout our organization to provide our audience with top-quality news and information relevant to their lives,” Appeal-Democrat Publisher Don T. Bricker said in a statement.
